Convert Documents to Markdown Online Free — Word, PDF, HTML and More

Markdown is where a lot of writing ends up: documentation sites, wikis, READMEs, static site generators, and notes apps.

The source material usually does not start there. It starts as a Word document, a PDF someone sent, an exported web page, or a spreadsheet.

ToolHub's Docs to MD converter turns those files into editable Markdown in your browser, one file or a whole batch at a time.

Try it here: convert documents to Markdown with ToolHub.

Supported Formats

  • Word and office documents: DOCX, RTF, ODT
  • PDF: text-based PDFs, read in best-effort reading order
  • Web and text: HTML, TXT
  • Spreadsheets: XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV, and TSV, converted to Markdown tables

Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text rather than text, so they need OCR elsewhere first. Legacy .doc files need to be saved as .docx before converting.

How to Convert a Document to Markdown

  1. Open Docs to MD.
  2. Choose one or more documents.
  3. Pick the Markdown flavor — GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) or CommonMark — and your formatting options.
  4. Convert. Each file shows its own progress, and you can cancel a batch.
  5. Select a result, review its notes, and edit the Markdown beside the live preview.
  6. Copy it, download a .md file, or download a ZIP with the Markdown and its images.

Markdown the Way Your Project Writes It

Every Markdown codebase has habits. The converter lets you match them:

  • ATX (#) or Setext headings
  • -, *, or + list markers
  • Fenced or indented code blocks
  • _ or * for emphasis, ** or __ for strong text
  • Inline or reference-style links
  • Line wrapping at 80 or 120 characters, or none
  • Optional YAML front matter with the document's metadata

Tables can stay as GFM tables or be flattened to text. Images can be embedded, extracted into a ZIP next to the Markdown, or removed.

Review Before You Publish

Conversion is rarely perfect, especially from PDF. That is why the result opens in an editor rather than straight into a download.

The converter lists what needed attention — unsupported elements, reading-order guesses in PDFs, removed remote images — so you know where to look. The preview is sanitized, and remote media is not fetched.

Documents are converted in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and linked remote images are never fetched.

Bring the document. Take the Markdown.
